Meet Grainseek. A unique travel wallet designed for travelers. From the outside, this may look like an ordinary wallet but its interior compartments are what makes this a distinctive product.
Inspiration
We interviewed the creators of the Grainseek wallet. They were inspired to create this wallet as they wanted a way to keep and organize cash of various currencies and denominations when traveling. They also wanted a way to store other items and valuables for quick and easy retrieval.
Speaking to one of the creators, Johnson, he said: “We find that the current wallets available in the market have insufficient compartments for storing cash or cash-sized items. We end up having to stuff all our notes and essentials in a confined slot in our wallet, making it messy and disorganized.”

The Problem
Most wallets in the market are designed in a similar way and do not fully cater to travelers. As a traveler, you carry cash in foreign currency, and likely in local currency too, and in different denominations. Yet most wallets have limited space for storing your notes.
You would either have to carry multiple wallets for storing both currencies or squeeze all your notes in a confined slot in a single wallet, making it cumbersome to carry and use.
With foreign currency of various denominations kept together in the same slot, it also becomes difficult to differentiate the notes that you have at first glance.
Some wallets also feature compartments that are difficult to use, taking more effort to retrieve or access your valuables. Examples of such wallets include those with multiple outer and inner zips and oddly-positioned card slots. Grainseek seeks to change all these.
Solutioning
To conceive possible solutions to the design challenges, the creators of the wallet looked broadly at other products for inspiration.
Browsing the stationery category, they came upon expanding file folders and were inspired by the symmetrical slots that allow you to categorize your documents besides merely filing them.
They decided to adopt the symmetrical slot design for Grainseek wallet, which would be a strong differentiation and first in the market. The slots are intuitive-to-use and maximizes the wallet’s space, allowing you to categorize your cash by currencies and denominations with additional space for other essentials.
Prototyping
We went behind-the-scenes to discover how the Grainseek wallet was made. According to the creators, they started off by sketching the wallet they had in mind from various angles, including top-down and side views.
Then they begun the prototyping process quite simply with some pieces of paper, a roll of transparent tape and a pair of scissors.
They tested out their idea by making a rectangular slot with paper that would represent the initial slot. Once they felt comfortable with the idea, more slots were created and eventually, they had their basic mock-up.
Next, they went deeper into the details. To ensure that the wallet would fit most banknotes, they looked up the dimensions of the most popular currencies to decide on the precise dimensions.
Creating the wallet involves putting together various pieces, such as the zip, inner compartments and supporting pieces that hold the wallet together. They begun by carefully sourcing and selecting suitable materials, such as leather, and applying their stitching skills with great passion. There were a few parts of the wallet that required to be stitched, such as the outer and inner fabric.
Making the inner compartments was challenging because they needed to determine the ideal number of slots so the wallet would not be too bulky while still accommodating your valuables. Also it required a high level of precision in their stitching as the slots open up at an angle.
